2-cm GPS altimetry over Crater Lake

چکیده
Differences in electromagnetic path delay, between direct Global Positioning System (GPS) signals and those reflected from the surface of Crater Lake, have led to lake surface height estimates with 2-cm precision in 1 second. This is the first high-precision altimetric demonstration with GPS from sufficient altitude (≈ 480 m) to probe fundamental experimental errors, which bear on future airand spaceborne passive GPS altimetry. It also serves as the first demonstration of a new approach to altimetric remote sensing in the coastal region, an area that is poorly measured by conventional radar altimetry. Time-series analyses suggest that tropospheric and thermal noise fluctuations dominate the altimetric error in this experiment. Estimating the differential delay from several simultaneously visible satellites may enable tropospheric error estimation and correction. Thermal noise on the reflected signal will be reduced with fully polarimetric observations and larger antenna apertures.

5-cm-Precision aircraft ocean altimetry using GPS reflections
[1] We present the first two aircraft Global Positioning System (GPS)-reflection altimetry measurements, the most precise GPS ocean-altimetry measurement, and demonstrate the altimetric precision and spatial resolution necessary to map mesoscale eddies. Our first experiment demonstrated a 14-cm precision single-satellite ocean altimetry measurement while our more recent experiment demonstrates ...
متن کاملInland Water Bodies Monitoring Using Satellite Altimetry over Indian Region
Satellite altimetry for inland water applications has evolved from investigation of water height retrieval to monitoring since last two decades. Altimetry derived reservoir/ river levels can subsequently be used to deal with key inland water resources problems such as flood, rating curve generation for remote locations, reservoir operations, and calibration of river/lake models. In this work 29...
متن کاملAccurate Linking of Lake Erie Water Level with Shoreline Datum Using GPS Buoy and Satellite Altimetry
There is a need to accurately link the water level to the shoreline vertical datum for various applications including coastal management, lake/river/estuary/wetland hydrological or storm surge modeling/forecasting. Coastal topography is historically surveyed and referenced to the predetermined vertical datum in terms of orthometric heights, or the heights above the geoid, which is poorly known ...
متن کامل1 2 N ov 2 00 3 PARFAIT : GNSS - R coastal altimetry
GNSS-R signals contain a coherent and an incoherent component. A new algorithm for coherent phase altimetry over rough ocean surfaces, called PARFAIT, has been developed and implemented in Starlab's STARLIGHT 1 GNSS-R software package. In this paper we report our extraction and analysis of the coherent component of L1 GPS-R signals collected during the ESTEC Bridge 2 experimental campaign using...
متن کاملCombined ICESat and CryoSat-2 Altimetry for Accessing Water Level Dynamics of Tibetan Lakes over 2003–2014
Long-term observations of lake water level are essential to our understanding of the evolution of Tibetan lake system. CryoSat-2 radar altimetry data over the Tibetan Plateau (2010–2014, P2) is used to extend lake level measurements from ICESat laser altimetry (2003–2009, P1). This study evaluates the performance of CryoSat-2 data by comparing with gauge-based water levels that are calibrated b...
